Los Medanos College hosted a movie night with a screening of “Superman” in the student union at 5:30 p.m., coordinated by Student Life. Upon arriving, there were red and blue balloon pillars at the entrance. Students came in after their classes to wind down and enjoy the movie in the upstairs lounge of the Student Union. The smell of buttery popcorn and sweet cotton candy filled the room as students sat down with their friends to wait for the movie to begin.
Superman is an action-packed movie that follows the main protagonist, Clark Kent, who faces an identity crisis as he must deal with his Kryptonian heritage while also knowing that he is a human, living in a world that doesn’t necessarily align with his own beliefs. It seems to be a well-received movie by many. Student Orion Fernandez, who has seen the movie multiple times, emphasizes how a movie night allows students to wind down. “I think in short words, it’s nice for the students to have entertainment now that it’s midterm time,” Fernandez said.
Student Juan Becerra encouraged any students who may feel discouraged to come to events to get engaged. “I used to avoid events like these because I was busy studying. Then too much studying made me stressed, so it’s definitely good for students to get engaged with the school and have a relaxing time away from academic pressure,” said Becerra.
Interim Coordinator for Student Life, Ivan Urrutia, talks about building a sense of community when it comes to planning events such as a move night for students. “Student life is always trying to build a student community. We are trying to get people to get to know each other. By engaging on campus, it helps students to make those connections that will help them in their academic journey and succeed,” said Urrutia.
One student even showed up in his Superman attire, dressed like the superhero himself, stating that he was excited to come see it. Student Evan Vance shares his favorite part of the movie. “My favorite part, or rather themes about the movie, is that it sends a message of doing good for the sole purpose because it’s right. Instead of doing good for the wrong reasons,” Vance said.
As more students walked in after the movie had started, they got their snacks and sat down. Student Rukundo Bimbona shares the importance of community.“Through events like this one, it builds unity, although community colleges have a negative stigma that there are not many strong communities compared to bigger universities,” said Bimbona.
The room was a comfortable place for students to get together with their friends, eat snacks, meet new people, and watch a movie. Some saw the movie for the first time, and others rewatched it. Movies can bring a community together, and it all starts on campus. Make sure to check the Los Medanos College website for any upcoming events such as these!
