The Los Medanos College Mustangs football team showed no mercy in front of their home fans with a crushing 76-29 wallop over the Cabrillo Seahawks Saturday afternoon.
Behind quarterback No. 9 Aidan Crawford’s 368 passing yards and running back No. 7 Jordan Barbadillo’s four-touchdown day, Los Medanos extended its undefeated season to 4-0 in an impressive show of skill.
“The O-line is the reason this happened,” said Barbadillo after the game. “This year we are playing for each other. It’s a family thing.”
From kickoff, it was obvious the Mustangs owned the field. On the first play from scrimmage, Crawford connected a beautiful lob with No. 12 Ryan McKendry for a monster 73-yard touchdown. Though the extra point failed, the rapid score opened up the game, dominated by big plays and relentless pressure.
Cabrillo responded back quickly though. Quarterback No. 10 Mario Cosma answered with a 49- yard bomb pass to No. 17 Patrick Miller-Brown, putting the Seahawks ahead 7-6 when they were able to secure the PAT.
But that would be the only time they held the lead of the game, as Los Medanos immediately got back down the field and scored with a one-yard touchdown run by Barbadillo, which was complimented by a successful two point conversion.
The Mustangs kept piling up the points and building their lead in the first quarter. Crawford found No. 8 Kevin Fowler for a 39-yard touchdown, then Barbadillo ripped off a 50-yard scoring run early in the second. By halftime, Los Medanos had built a 37-21 advantage, all due to their aggressive attacks that built up to over 300 yards of offense in just two quarters.
The third quarter really sealed Cabrillo’s chances. On the first play of the half, Crawford dropped another dime for a 46-yard touchdown pass to No. 5 Larenzo Mayfield, growing their lead. Cosma tried to keep Cabrillo alive with another score to Mendoza, cutting the deficit to 43-29. But Los Medanos crushed all hope for Cabrillo after three unanswered touchdowns, with a 34-yard run from Barbadillo and a second touchdown from Mayfield.
By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, the Mustangs were in full control. Los Medanos’ offensive numbers were insane: 735 total yards, including 395 through the air and 340 on the ground. McKendry (188 receiving yards, 1 TD) and Mayfield (109 yards, 2 TDs) were nearly unstoppable, while Barbadillo averaged 17.5 yards per carry.
Throughout the fourth quarter, LMC continued to
ominate, building their lead even higher. No. 29 Bradley Cooper even lifted an interception to keep the audience engaged.
“That was the greatest moment of my life,” said Cooper after the game.
The game ended with a dominant LMC clocking in at 76 points to Cabrillo’s 29, bringing LMC’s pristine record to 4-0
“It’s a good feeling to be 4-0,” said Head Coach Christopher Shipe.
The goal is to get to bowl with a perfect record, and the team looks right on track.
“There’s a couple things we need to clean up, but overall, it’s really good,” said defensive lineman No. 78, Dominic Amezcua. “Excited for the bowl—wanna get there 7-0.”
LMC hopes to bring their excellence to the field to their next home game on Saturday, Oct. 11 against Feather River at 1 p.m.
