Students arrived in their best attire to dance at Los Medanos College Winter Ball held inside of the Student Union Conference Center Wednesday, Dec. 3. From suits to dresses, all of the students prepared their best look to have a good time at the event. After walking down the red carpet that greets you as you enter the room, the area is filled with decorations and activities that students can enjoy. The decorations consisted of fairy lights, blue balloon pillars and blue birds on the tables. The decorations on each of the tables were birds that were made out of recycled cardboard by Puente that students can keep and take home.
Robert Gonzales a Student Life employee shared how the decorations played a major role in setting up for the Winter Ball. “Everybody had specific roles to play and Cheyenne Phan was the one in charge. She was the mastermind of the entire decoration as she planned out the entire room,” Gonzales said.
Within the first hour people got up to grab food that was available for them to enjoy. There was catering from Olive Garden with creamy chicken alfredo, spaghetti and caesar salad and refreshments as well. Toward the end of the night there was dessert such as cookies, brownies and ice cream.
A plethora of different genres played throughout the night that would cater to everyone’s music tastes. From rap to pop music, to classic 2000s music, there were a lot of upbeat songs to get students up and dancing.
Student Rukundo Bimbona expressed what he felt was the highlight of the night.“I would say that the highlight of today’s ball is seeing people enjoy themselves.
As well as the decorations and seeing everyone on the dance floor being unified,” Bimbona said. When asked what song he would like to be played during the dance he said, “All of the songs so far are good, but if I had to choose a song it’d be “DJ Got Us Fallin’ In Love” by Usher,” Bimbona said.
There was a strong sense of unity out on the dance floor as students got most energized for “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus and “Payaso de rodeo” by Caballo Dorado as those songs played students rushed to the dance floor.
The people behind the making of the Winter Ball, Ismael Nuño Ramirez, Vanessa Lule, Tatiana Rodriguez and Robert Gonzales share how the plan came to be, “Tatiana had the idea of a ball and we started planning as if we were to do it. It was very spontaneous,” Ramirez said.
Lule expresses her thoughts on the turnout of the event, “We were satisfied with all of the work that we did. We were just proud of making it happen and our expectations were definitely surpassed, it’s more than we hoped for. The work that we did even if it was tedious, in the end it made it worth it and it was definitely a group effort,” Lule said.
For many students like student Alexis Butler and Adra Enea, it’s their first time attending a dance on campus. Student Alexis Butler shares her reason for coming to the event, “I guess I’m getting out of my comfort zone. It’s my first time coming to an LMC dance, and the music and the people have been nice, ” Butler said.
Student Adra Enea came to have a good night with friends, “I’ve never actually been to one of LMC’s dances before so I thought why not. It’s been a good night but the music choices could use a bit of work and could be better. I say more Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Pitbull,” Enea said. Additionally adding how she feels that the Winter Ball was a great way to see familiar faces. “The highlight of the night has been running into people that I don’t often see. In college it’s really hard to make time for everyone but coming here is a chance to see them and get to know them better,” Enea said.
The Winter ball was a successful night filled with dancing, laughs and positive energy that stayed throughout the night. For many, this was their first dance at LMC and an eventful night to remember.
