Clubs from Los Medanos College gathered on the quad to attract new members and announce their upcoming events for the semester last Thursday, Sept. 11. The event was joyous and full of lots of students checking out the different booths for each club. The feeling of the event was very positive.
“It went really well. It was very well received overall,” said Robert Delgado, LMC’s director of student life. After the event, he met with around 20 student associates and workers to get a good feel of the reaction to the event. He mentioned the students he talked to were happy with how the event went.
“All of them said it was great,” Delgado said. “Some of them said they liked it more than Mustang day, which was surprising to me. They were saying that the interactions were very positive, that the vibe was very good.”
The clubs were a mix of academics, communities and interest groups, with something for almost everyone.
Academic clubs present include Math and Early Child Education, which focus on students in a certain area of study. “We want to start bringing more people to our club,” said Paola Medina, treasurer of Math Club. This fair is a great opportunity.” Math Club is focused on math, but it also hosts social events for students to have fun.
“It’s a great thing to put on a resume,” said Jessica Wahi, Vice President for Math Club. “It also builds a community for people who love math.”
Some academic-focused clubs were spreading the word about their upcoming trips to colleges as well, like Women in STEM, a club focused on supporting women in STEM.
They are planning trips to UCs and spreading the word about them at the fair.
Other clubs are focused on building bonds with students from certain communities, like Pride Alliance, Puente and Kapwa.
“It’s a great place to build a community among LGBTQ people and make friends,” said Harry Pettis, LMC Pride Alliance. “Who doesn’t want to meet a friend?”
Pride club is open to all students, not just members of the LGBTQ community.
“We are about making a community space,” said Jamie Gantt, a student associate of Pride Alliance. “We are trying to give students a sense of belonging, here and now.”
Hobby or interest groups like Hyphae or the Writer’s Guild showed off their achievements and upcoming plans.
Hyphae Club, a group of students focused on connecting to nature, tabled at the event in hopes to attract new members and show off their accomplishments from last semester. Their flagship achievement was corn grown from scratch in the nature preserve.
Information about clubs can be found on the LMC website regarding their meetings and advisors. For more specific details, each club generally has an Instagram account where one can find more information.
