ICC, Los Medanos College’s club management body, hosts their “special meeting” on September 2 in the Student Union to discuss budgets, ideas, and plans for the next Club Rush on September 11 .
Robert Delgado, the Program Manager of student services was in charge of leading the meeting to set the stage for club advisors to jump into a conversation of club costs. Most club advisors were present such as those from Christian club, KAPWA club, HYPHAE club, Women in S.T.E.M and many more.
The club advisors politely listened to the different ideas proposed amongst themselves and their pitches for Club Rush. Throughout the meeting, ICC secretary, Sierra Churchwell, was involved in engaging conversations about the costs of materials needed for Club Rush, giving the club advisors a rough estimate of what their budget looks like. This estimate gives club advisors a clear answer on how to prepare for Club Rush, allowing them to get read a week in advance.
The clubs made the unanimous decision to decorate their individual club stations, moving on to discuss the activities that will engage students passing by their tables
ICC President Julio Fernandez discusses the importance of the “special” meeting. “It was a special circumstance, it’s a meeting in order to set up for the upcoming Club Rush. We wanted to make sure that people came here to ask any questions that they wanted to talk about. It was a collaborative effort amongst all of the club advisors who attended the meeting.”
Fernandez adds on to say “I think the meeting went really well. When I went to ICC meetings last year, the current president would then address certain topics. There’s now a change of pace that I face when now I’m the one having to be the person asking everybody their thoughts ,” he said, reflecting on his duty as president.
Fernandez notes the importance for clubs to have resources like ICC, encouraging students to start their own. “There are plenty of clubs that you can start on your own. I’m hoping that people gain inspiration by seeing these clubs. I feel like there should be clubs that should exist but they haven’t been created yet,” said Fernandez.
Sophia Goyena, an attendee at the meeting who is a part of both Christian club and KAPWA club, expresses her thoughts on her meeting as a new student on campus. “After the meeting, I feel more confident and more informed on what to do,” said Goyena.
When asked if these sort of meetings are available to other students, Brianna Navarro, a part of Christian club states “The meeting was only for advisors but it is also available for people who are considering starting a club, to see the behind the scenes of it all,” said Navarro.
Club Rush will be hosted in the outdoor quad next week on Sept. 11, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
