Scholarship season is fast approaching as new opportunities await Los Medanos College students who will need to meet the Feb. 19, 2025 deadline to potentially be awarded money to help support their educational goals.

The most recent scholarships available to students are part of the LMC General Foundation Scholarship fund which will reward between $200 to $1,000 to those who are continuing at LMC from Fall 2024 to Spring 2025. Students who are transferring are eligible for scholarships of up to $12,000.

Some examples of the current LMC College General Foundation awards are the Bob Zavala, “Making a Difference in the Lives of Children” scholarship, $400, the Brentwood Math Scholarship; $500, for students in current Brentwood math classes; and the Dean S. Lesher Scholarship with students receiving $1,000.

As for separate opportunities outside of the LMC College General Foundation, among the opportunities that students can receive are scholarships such as Kennedy-King Memorial College Scholarship that can pay up to $6,000 for students who are transferring to a four-year college or university in fall 2025 or spring 2026.

For student Kat Pangilinan, scholarships are something currently on her mind.

“I’m probably most interested in S.T.E.M. ones and need to get started,” she said, adding she is also considering applying for the Kennedy King scholarships.

She encourages students to apply for scholarships, especially those for whom it might be harder financially to move onto four-year universities.

“It’s important because I feel like especially with where we are [in college] and we kinda need what we can get,” she said.

Financial Aid Specialist Beverly Bui said the LMC Foundation offers 33 scholarships and the application process is straightforward. The students will need to address questions on their educational journey, career goals, community service, and financial need. In addition to the basic questions, students must answer two essay questions and have two letters of reference.

“Students may be eligible to receive multiple awards. The criteria varies for each scholarship,” Bui said.

Bui also explained that while most recipients receive the full award amount. scholarships may be prorated for part-time students.

“Scholarship funds can help make higher education more affordable. Scholarships can be used for educational expenses including new equipment, transportation, and housing.” said Bui. “All students are encouraged to apply for scholarships.”

Student Tenisha Manoharan is currently looking into the Kennedy King scholarship among others.

“Many students have financial needs. It can help fund their dreams and future successes,” she said.

Students can access the scholarships through the LMC Website. By searching LMC Scholarships and clicking the link to the general scholarships students can look at the long list of scholarships. Students will need to also provide an unofficial transcript, two letters of recommendation and complete two personal essays. They will also need to be currently enrolled for both fall and spring semester and have a current minimum GPA of 2.0 at LMC.
