Over the weekend, the release of “Him,” directed by Justin Tipping, hit theater screens on Friday, Sept. 15.
“Him” is a rated R horror film that goes through the life of college football star Cameron Cade, played by Tiriq Withers, who is willing to do anything to make it to the top. Isaiah White, a state quarterback who is played by Marlon Wayans, takes Cameron under his wing to show him the ropes of what it really takes to make it to GOAT status. The concept of a football horror film was a great idea for a scary movie and gave audiences something new instead of the regurgitated jumpscare demon we are all familiar with.
Although it was originally believed by fans to be a Jordan Peele film, it is not; Peele was just one of the many producers of this film. The movie definitely had a Peele vibe, through the way it was directed and the cinematography, as well as the story, gave off heavy Peele inspiration. The film isn’t too long, with a run time of one hour and 36 minutes; it can get a bit lost in the story, but it’s very enjoyable overall.
An amazing way to watch “Him” would be in Dolby Atmos, which is a type of surround sound technology that gives the viewer an extremely immersive experience. It should be available at many local movie theaters. The sound and music that are featured in the film make Dolby Atmos the perfect way to watch “Him.”
Tiriq Withers and Marlon Wayans did an amazing job acting in this film. Withers was really bringing his character Cameron to life, and with him not being a familiar face in the industry, he was able to show his skills and prove that he is, in fact, a phenomenal actor. Both men were able to embody their characters and bring the script alive. Wayans has always been well known for years, especially for his more comedic roles, but this was a complete 180 and he did not disappoint.
The main negative about this film would be that the trailer definitely showed too much of the film; had they left certain clips out, the movie’s shocking moments would have hit even harder. The movie itself didn’t do well rating-wise, but I think this movie is for sure a watch-it-yourself and make up your own opinion. If you are waiting for the next hit from Peele, or want to see a weirdly enjoyable movie, “Him” should be able to satisfy that itch and give you a good experience on your next trip to the movies.
