With Sophomore night feelings and emotions in the air and playoff positioning on the line, the Los Medanos College women’s basketball team put out one of their most competitive games of the season. Riding on a four-game winning streak and holding an 8-4 conference record, LMC came in knowing they needed these wins to keep their postseason hopes alive. The Mustangs delivered just exactly that too, taking down Solano College 68-50 and extending their streak to five straight wins.
The opening quarter reflected the pressure of the moment. Both teams traded the ball early, with the score locked at 6-6 late in the first quarter. LMC forced frequent turnovers through aggressive defense and their famous full-court press, but missed opportunities at the rim kept the score tight. The Mustangs closed the quarter with a 10-6 lead, even with early shooting struggles, all thanks to their defense that left Solano with few clean looks.
LMC’s identity as a team was starting to take over in the second quarter. While the Mustangs dialed back their full-court press slightly, the pressure was still there and constant. Strong perimeter defense and core defense in the paint continued to suffocate Solano’s offense. Offensively, LMC found their rhythm by attacking the rim. The Mustangs connected on more layups and pushed the pace without forcing shots. By halftime, LMC had opened up a 29-14 lead.
The Mustangs were nowhere near done slowing down in the third quarter. With the team’s confidence growing as the game went on, LMC began knocking down three-point shots to give a different approach on scoring. The defense remained relentless, forcing turnovers and limiting so many opportunities. LMC stretched its lead to 43-31 and closed the quarter ahead 48-38, maintaining full control of the game.
LMC wasted no time making their presence known in the fourth quarter. Eve Monzon opened the quarter with a three-pointer, hyping up the home crowd and getting the Mustangs’ momentum in the groove immediately. LMC continued to finish efficiently at the basket, get more value out of their possessions with ball movement, and trust teammates in transition. The Mustangs pushed the lead to 56-44 and never looked back, closing out the game with poise to secure a 68-50 victory.
Head coach Mario Pharr said managing emotions was a key focus entering the game, especially with sophomore night adding extra pressure.
“I let them know before we started that emotions were going to be high, but we still had a mission,” the coach said. “We’re trying to get playoff ready. They came out a little too energized at first and missed some shots, but we stuck to what we were supposed to do.”
The coach emphasized that growth throughout the season has been central to the team’s success, particularly with a team with so many freshmen.
“There’s always ups and downs,” he said. “Last year we set the foundation. This year we brought in a lot of talent, but maturity had to grow. Today you saw us clicking. A lot of assists, a lot of made shots. That’s exciting.”
Sophomore guard Aleyxs Acosta said the night was meaningful both personally and collectively.
“It was really cool to have all the sophomores on the court together one last time at home,” Acosta said. “Each of us played our game, and it led to a really good win.”
Kendall McClure echoed that statement too, calling the win overall a mount of trust and unselfish basketball.
“Everybody contributed, and anytime that happens, that’s a good win,” McClure said. “Unselfish basketball is the best basketball.”
With sophomore night behind them, LMC now turns its focus toward the final stretch of the season. As the Mustangs continue their push toward the playoffs, this performance stood as a clear statement of who they are and what they are capable of finishing as.
