Music is an essential part of how we connect with the world around us, especially during transitions like the shift from winter to spring. While the sun starts to show its face, flowers begin to bloom and the grass gets greener by the minute, LMC student’s playlists are changing along with the weather.
What song reminds you of spring? Students at Los Medanos College answered with their personal favorite, flowy, song of the season.
Student, Aaliyah Paiva shared that her favorite artist to listen to while the sun comes out is 1990’s indie folk/dream pop star, Mazzy Star. “Her music is just very flowy and it reminds me of Spring which just feels so flowy and free.”
Another student, Ariel Paiva, answered with her favorite Indie rock band ‘The Neighborhood,’ saying she’s more of a winter fan and that her music taste doesn’t change by season but the song ‘Cry Baby’ by ‘The Neighborhood’ reminds her of the spring.
A surprising number of students shared their love of listening to rock/metal music during spring time. In the season of growth, renewal, and flowers, many LMC scholars are taking in the vibes of the season with their favorite hard-core music.
Student, Erick Ortiz says he mostly listens to metal music and if he had to choose his favorite artists to listen to during Spring, it would be Deftones because of the softer songs in their discography that still give him a taste of rock or artist Violet Vira for her “voice that sounds like Spring”.
Another student who enjoys their fair share of rock music during the Spring is Jeremiah Daniels who explained that his favorite song to listen to while Spring starts rolling is ‘If It Makes You Happy’ by Michael Cera Palin which is an indie rock band.
On the other side of the musical genre spectrum some students are taking in the sunny side of Spring by listening to songs with a more cheerful tone.
Student Yara Martinez shared that this Spring season she will be listening to a lot of Disney songs. ‘Take a Hint’ by the Victorious cast and ‘You’re welcome’ by Dwayne Johnson from the Disney movie ‘Moana’ remind her of the Spring. She also mentioned that Rihanna will be making a comeback on her playlists after rediscovering her music. “’Breaking Dishes’ is a really good song by her,” said Martinez.
Brisa Leon, a student at LMC, explained that her favorite song of the Spring is ‘Yo No Sé Mañana’ by Enrique Perez because of its happy, sunny tone. “I mostly listen to Spanish music and that song most reminds me of Spring.
Another Los Medanos student, Makai Delaura, said that he will be listening to Childish Gambino, specifically the album ‘Avista’ by him this Spring because it reminds him of Spring of last year and brings him back to that time of his life.
The transition from winter to spring brings more than just warmer weather. It also shifts the way students at Los Medanos College express themselves through music. Whether the choice is indie, metal, pop or anything in between, it’s clear that music is a personal and evolving soundtrack to the changing seasons.
