With Spring break coming to an end, Los Medanos College students are officially halfway through the semester and entering a season of growth. As the sun shines brighter than it has all winter students are balancing school, work and more. Students listen to a wide array of music as they study hard through the second half of the semester. The most popular genres students listen to during the spring are Pop, Alternative, Indie, Korean and Rock.
Around campus, multiple students were interviewed on their favorite songs they have been listening to as of late.
While some students listened to mostly more modern releases like the trending song ‘Babydoll’ by Dominic Fike, other students still look back at classics from icons of previous eras such as Michael Jackson’s “Childhood” and the classic teen pop song, “Genie in a Bottle” by Christina Aguilera.
Grace Ko, an LMC student said, “I like 80s music because it was my dad’s teenage dream music.”
Student Treslyan Shelton, enjoys country music as his favorite genre. Shelton cites the “storytelling” within his favorite country songs as what draws him to the genre and helps him have built an “emotional connection to the song.”
Jewell Ogden, who said that R&B, short for Rhythm and Blues, is their favorite genre for spring said, “It’s mellow with different types of artists.” Dulce Cruz, also said that R&B is their favorite genre, cited the versatility of the genre as what draws them to the music.
“I feel like R&B is right for any time.”
Many people said pop music is their favorite genre going into spring because it hypes them up and they love the beats. Dulce Mauro said, “it pumps me up for making plans for the summer,” said Mauro.
Student Adacgo Ehajor said that Pop song Billie Eilish’s ‘Happier Than Ever’ is their current favorite.
Each student connects with their favorite songs and genres in different ways.
Some students said Indie was their favorite genre because they believe it helps them transition into the end of the school year.
LMC student Aiden Pacuan said that Indie music is, “the perfect vibe for the transition into summer too.”
Daniela Rodrguez, echoed this statement, saying that Indie music “goes with the mood.” Student Naquwila Simpson said, “It makes me want to sing” in reference to their favorite song “Babydoll,” by Dominic Fike.
As students transition into the warmer months and towards the end of the school year, some choose hip hop or rap as their favorite genre.
Andrea Fingesi said, “It’s nice and the voices are cool and I like the beat,” his favorite song right now is the “For me” remix by Loe Shimmy.
Rock was also a well liked genre to hype students up for spring. Nabjab Hami said, “you can listen to it any time it goes with any emotion.”
As the year gets warmer, some students are relaxing, others are getting hyped up, and a few are listening to their all time favorite genre all year round.
No matter the genre, music helps to prepare students for spring and the end of the semester. With a variety of music, genres and students at the LMC, the diversity of the campus can be seen all over the school. Whether your music makes you want to sing like pop or just chill out like Indie, they all fit the springtime vibe of campus.
