The Los Medanos College Licensed Vocational Nursing Program (LVN) is resuming for the Spring 2015 semester.
LVN Director Sharon Goldfarb is re-vamping the LVN Program and encourages students who are interested in nursing to complete an application.
The LMC Nursing Programs Department will be accepting applications Sept. 1 through Oct. 17 for an LVN class that would begin January 12, 2015. There are twenty-four slots available.
The LVN Program at LMC was down for one year due to staff funding issues according to Goldfarb.
The Nursing Department offers two programs, the Vocational Nursing Program and the Registered Nursing Program, which includes an LVN to RN option.
Graduates completing the LVN Program will receive a Certificate of Completion and qualify to take the State Board Examination (NCLEX-PN) for licensure as a vocational nurse (LVN). Graduates will have the option to walk at graduation to receive their certificate along with a separate pin ceremony.
The LVN Program requires three semesters of academic work and clinical experience which meets the Basic Curriculum guidelines. Clinical will take place at Contra Costa Community Hospitals and the VA clinical. The required prerequisites are BIOSC-30, COMSC-049, ENGL-090, MATH-025, NUTRI-055 and BUS-086.
“My goal for the program is to train compassionate hearts and scientific minds,” said Goldfarb. She intends to build the program based on evenings and weekends. “I am expecting that most of the students in the program will be working full-time who need a flexible schedule. I really want all my students in the program to finish and become successful and I am willing to help out in any way I can.”
The LVN Program abides by the general policies of Contra Costa Community College District and supports the educational philosophy of LMC.
According to Labor and Statistics the average salary of an LVN in California is $47,000 per year and in Antioch the median salary is $47,593 per year. Employment of LVNs will be expected to grow 21% between 2014 and 2018 to care for aging baby boomers.
LVNs provide basic nursing care in a variety of settings that include Extended Care Facilities, Nursing Homes, Hospitals, Physician’s Offices, Private Homes, Convalescent Homes, Outpatient Clinics, Ambulatory Surgery Centers and Hospice Care.
