Perception and Imagination

New show in art gallery at LMC
Donna Fenstermaker’s “After Joseph Cornell”

The Perception and Imagination art reception was hosted in the Los Medanos College art gallery Thursday, Feb. 15, displaying the works of Donna Fenstermaker and Lucy Snow. Community members, staff and students were all in attendance to see the work showcased and speak with artists.

“It’s cool seeing the different varieties of art. It’s interesting to see the different techniques,” said Isabella Ramoz.

Both current and past students came to view the works on display and catch up with their past professors.

“Donna and Lucy were [our] professors. We came to support them and celebrate their work,” said Jennifer Ramos, adding she is “a big fan of their work and it’s good to see what they’re up to.”

The Q&A section of the event, which Art History professor Nick Nabas led, was filled with laughter as both Fenstermaker and Snow answered audiences’ questions regarding their inspirations, techniques and experience creating art.

There was a range of art on display such as woodwork, ceramics, paintings and mixed media.

Fenstermaker, who is retiring this year, had art on display spanning over the last two decades. She said she liked seeing her work all shown with one another as her studio space only allows her to see four pieces up at a time.

“There is a way artwork talks to each other,” she said.

She enjoys events like these where her students can come see her work and use the skills she teaches to her students.

“You tell them how to do all this stuff, then they get to come see it and ask me questions about how to do it,” she said.

Lucy Snow said it’s a good feeling to have her ceramic sculptures on display for others to see after spending countless hours working on them.

“It feels great, I’m really thankful,” said Snow, adding “I worked hard on it and I’m glad people are enjoying it.”

Spirits were high as everyone gathered to see all the art on display and engage in lively conversations. Snacks and refreshments were provided for those attending after the talkback with the artists.

“It’s an area to congregate and enrich,” said Alondra Cervantes.

Fenstermaker and Snow’s art will be on display until March 15 in the art gallery located in the LMC Library. The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 12-4 p.m. It is free admission and open to the public.
