Musical artist quinn, known by their monikers “quinn” and “osquinn” recently released their new single entitled “all the things.” quinn’s “all the things” calls on their similar hyperpop and glitchpop styles with the crunchy auto-tune and flow, while also working in a more plugg-n-b influenced backing track.
Their lyrics touch on multiple bases — of course, they mention common themes such as making money and being confident in themselves and their musical ability, but they also delve into some of their own insecurities, referencing their own quietness and loneliness — feeling disconnected from their peers.
While I enjoyed the overall sound of the song, I feel the lyrics were a bit discombobulated with the interrupting of serious topics surrounding mental health and wellbeing to talk about how rich they are. I feel that even though the backing track was pleasant, the flow didn’t complement the music as well as I’d hoped. Comparing this to one of their most popular tracks “i dont want that many friends in the first place,” “all the things” misses the mark.
“i dont want that many friends in the first place” had more cohesion between the two topics, talking about not trusting their peers and feeling antisocial and outcast by their peers and their own arrogance fit well together, as their prior song came at the topic from a more mental health angle due to the expression of arrogance. “all the things” is really just a coagulation of boasting about wealth with a few odd lines referencing mental illness, leaving it feeling crammed in rather than one combined topic.
Adding onto this, their use of the same flow and rhyme pattern ends up sounding one-note, furthering the lack of lyrical composition or similar theme. If they’d used a less repetitive backing track as well as switched up their vocal style, the lyrics would feel more like a topic switch rather than them consistently interrupting themselves to remind us they’re rich.
The backing track, while pleasant, doesn’t feel emphasized by the lyrics or autotuning in any way. With their prior single “i dont want that many friends in the first place” quinn perfectly combined an energetic backing track with energetic and crunchy vocals and filtering. While plugg-n-b usually employs a similar use of autotune with more laidback sounds and samples, “all the things” has too energetic of vocals for the two to really pair well together.
It would be nice to see quinn use similar ad-libs and sounds to amplify the track, and their lyrics in the past have been more clever and creative as opposed to “all the things” which is relatively simple for them.
As a long-time fan of quinn, I am impressed by their artistry and emotionality in their discography, so hearing this new track was just a touch disappointing. I hope to see them continue to find their style and can’t wait for their next track.
