The Los Medanos College Drama Department is set to premier their rendition of “The 39 Steps,” written by Patrick Barlow and directed by Nick Garcia. This parody play opens Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. and has six shows through the first two weeks of December in The Little Theater on Pittsburg campus.
This fast-paced parody play that mixes serious and silly aspects, follows Richard Hannay, a man who is forced to flee his home after he is framed for a crime he didn’t commit.
Director Nick Garcia expressed that during darker times it’s important to have a play that is a little more lighthearted and he “Hopes everyone comes and has a good time.”
Theater Stage Specialist Mylan Johnson shared that one of the unique parts of this play is that the costumes and set will be in black and white, really putting audience back into the world of the 1930s giving the play a similar feeling to the setting of the Alfred Hitchcock film iteration of “The 39 Steps,” which was also in black and white.
Actor Raven Figeuroa, who plays main character Richard Hannay expressed enjoyment in getting to be a part of a project such as this, and put emphasis on wanting to deliver the best performance he can.
“I hope there is never a point where the audience thinks I’m playing a character.” Figeuroa said. Watching the initial performances of the cast it is clear that many involved put a lot of effort in creating this version of “The 39 Steps.”
Actor Juan Cervantes expressed a sense of amazement and pride seeing how the play is coming together and added “I hope people enjoy it as much as we do.”
