The Remnants is a student-led and written play that was done by the Drama 61 Ensemble class and explores the ideas of grief, and the longing for a lost connection.
While it only ran for about an hour, the play was able to pack a lot of emotion and follow a steady plot throughout the entirety of its run time.
There was a strong performance as the younger sibling by Jayden Hawkins, who was able to push the storyline forward and set the pace for how the plot was executed. They also delivered solid emotional acting and were able to make the audience feel what they were feeling.
One thing that I really liked about this play was that a lot of it took place in the audience, which I felt really drew people in and was able to place an emphasis on the scenes that were taking place. It felt different to watch cast members do whole scenes in the audience section, but I really enjoyed it.
“The Great One,” played by Ruslan Valuullin, was also a strong performance. He was able to project his voice, and at many points during the play whenever he yelled or screamed, it was felt by the audience. He did a good job playing the villain in the show and was able to make the crowd really feel his eerie and unsettling energy.
I would also like to give props to the lighting team, who were able to help build strong emotions and scenes through the lighting displayed. I also enjoyed how they were able to use lighting to emphasize a different thought, or action, throughout the play that audience members might have not been able to pick up on without it.
Overall, The Remnants was a solid play that gives a strong message about the lengths that people will go to for the chance to see a lost loved one again. It’s a strong play about grief and letting go of the past to be able to move forward.
If you would like to experience this play, it will be performed at the LMC Little Theater on May 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, and 22 at 7 p.m. and a matinee happening on May 20 at 10 a.m.
