For Assistant Coach Murkice Carter, basketball has helped shape the man he is today. A man that is revered and respected by his players. A man defined by his character, his work ethic, and his heart.
First year Assistant Coach at Los Medanos College, Coach Carter helped lead the team to a 21-9 record.
His coaching experience, however, dates back way farther than LMC.
Coaching at Freedom High School and Diablo Valley College, Carter established himself as a leader.
His coaching style is defined by his leadership and will to win. Carter goes on to say “coaching and playing is almost the same because I’m super competitive and the feeling is the same when you win or lose.”
More than winning or losing, or the numbers you see on a stat sheet, Carter has been imparted with important lessons from basketball that he has taken with him to this day.
“Basketball has shaped my life by teaching me discipline, hard work and dedication and also taught me how to make adjustments.”
He adds “just like a game of basketball, every day is different just like every game is different and you have to be willing to make adjustments in order to be successful.”
Off the court, Carter channels his focus and ambition into his clothing business, a brand he built from the ground up.
As a black entrepreneur, he takes immense pride in carving out a space for himself in an industry that isn’t always accessible or welcoming.
His designs reflect the same values he brings to coaching: authenticity, creativity, and confidence.
For his athletes, seeing their coach succeed in business is as inspiring as seeing him succeed in his role on the sidelines.
Carter states, “something that I implement in my everyday work life & my clothing brand is being a great leader and leading by example.” He adds, “I’m the majority owner of my brand and my business partners look to me to carry most situations. I was a leader/captain on most teams I played on I’m able to take on a leadership role with my brand”
Balancing coaching, entrepreneurship, and fatherhood isn’t simple, but Carter embraces it.
His resilience on the court strengthen his commitment as a father.
His creativity as a business owner fuels his leadership. His everyday choices show the man that he is, one that LMC basketball is honored to have.
