Excitement filled the air as students set up for the Los Medanos College Club Rush. Students and staff work together to arrange tables, poster boards and trivia wheels. Club Rush is an event where LMC clubs get together to recruit members and spread awareness about who they are and activities they host.
The event ran from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10 and was located on the 3rd level of the college complex.
When asked what club leadership gives back to students, the common consensus was community. “I want this club to be a safe and open space for thought and asking questions,” said Co-president Chelsea Hummel of the Philosophy Club. “The only other anime club is all the way in Berkeley. Having a community where we get to talk about what we like is important to me,” said Vice President Angel Pinones of the Anime club.
In a brief interview with the Umoja Scholars and Black Student Union table, member Jalonnie Straiten expresses that his favorite part about Club Rush is meeting new and different people. “It’s a sense of community and belonging,” he adds. Similarly, Vice President Yelena Rosco of KAPWA emphasized the importance of teaching history, having a community and meeting others.
Students also collected various items offered from the clubs on display. The KAPWA club had cotton candy, and the Puente Club sold Mexican food for students to enjoy. In addition to food items, there were pride flags provided by the Pride Club. Key chains and pins were provided by the program coordinator for student life, Lindsay Litowitz. Each club had its own unique charms, such as miniature keys for the Philosophy club or gears for the Rotary club. The idea was to collect a charm from each table and add it to your keychain. One student, Eve Jones, proclaimed that “The free charms are the best.”
Getting ready for club rush was no easy feat. Some club advisors we spoke to had their own event organizers and spent their own money buying charms and decorating posters.
