At Los Medanos College, the Transfer and Career Center is a key resource for students navigating the paths they have with education routes and success. Whether students are preparing for a transfer to a four-year university or locking an internship, the center is focused on guiding them through the stages of their academic journeys.
For many students, the transfer process can seem very overwhelming. Understanding how to transfer credits, researching schools and meeting deadlines can quickly feel like a dreadful task. That’s why the Transfer and Career Center is here to help.
The center has support, offering many workshops, one on one advising, and assets specifically designed to simplify the transfer process. “Our goal is to simplify the process and give students the tools they need to succeed as easily as possible,” Sandra Parsons explained. From choosing the right four-year school to understanding how credits will transfer, the Transfer and Career Center is focused on helping students at every step of the college journey.
The center also has partnerships with other local universities with transfer agreements. These agreements help students earn credits at LMC and count toward their bachelor’s degree at other institutions involved.
The partnership provides a guaranteed safety net for the students, allowing them to confidently plan their academic path knowing their hard work will pay off.
Additionally, the center works with students to help weave their own personal transfer plans, making sure that they are on track for admission to their desired universities. Whether students are transferring to UC Berkeley or another institution, the Transfer and Career Center is there to make the process as easy as possible.
While the Transfer and Career Center is known for its transfer services, it also plays a key role in helping students prepare for the workforce. The center has career services, including resume reviews, interview preparation, and job search methods. In addition, they host career fairs, connecting employers with students who want internships and full time jobs which are such great opportunities.
The center is also looking to expand and develop. There are plans to develop virtual counseling, build out alumni programs, and strengthen the existing partnerships to increase opportunities. The goal is to keep up with the students needs and the constantly changing scenes.
For many scholars, these available resources make a wild difference. Benjamin Osborn, who is an associate who also works with partnering colleges and offers assistance to students is a role player at the center.
“October 1st is when CSU applications open up, and that’s when students who are education oriented really start working hard on their applications,” Osborn said. “The workshops are important because there’s so much to get right, and the center makes sure we don’t miss anything.”
He added that staff provide hands-on support throughout the process. “We’ve been trained to do applications correctly and to make sure we utilize the application format properly to avoid rejections. We help evaluate and review applications, telling exactly what they need to fix.”
Justin Peelonio, another student using the center’s services and was at the presentation, had a similar experience. “I didn’t find the transfer application process intuitive at first,” he said. “But the center made it clear with all the information in their slides and their explanations. It was incredibly helpful.”
Workshops are offered both in person and on Zoom, giving students flexibility to fit sessions into their schedules. Registration is simple through the center’s website, making it easy to access support when you need it the most. Osborn even said “Our zoom workshops are for students who have a busy schedule, you can easily go on the website and register for one”
As the Transfer and Career Center continues to grow, it remains a vital resource for some students preparing to transfer or enter the workforce. The center plays a vital role in helping LMC students take their next steps with confidence and pride.
