A crowd formed at the Constitution Day event for the upcoming special election for Prop 50, which will allow California to redistrict before the 2026 election. Alyssa King, a student at LMC, attended the event, knowing the importance of registering to vote.
“I think as young people, who are the people who are going to be affected by these votes in the future, it’s important that we’re educated and we know what we’re actually voting for, so that way we can actually make an impact and a difference on the community in which we live,” said King.
The event was on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and it took place in the middle of LMC Campus. Many different organizations ran the Constitution Day event. Ivan Urrutia, the interim program coordinator for the Office of Student Life, credited two other organizations with planning and running it.
“It’s the Office of Student Life and then we’re partnering with the League of Women’s voters of Diablo Valley to come and help speak about the voter registration process. The LMC student government is helping as well,” said Urrutia.
During the event, people received hot dogs and water. They also spun the wheel to get a constitution-related question, if they got it right, they won a prize. There were also many free giveaways that the students indulged in, like pins, stickers, journals and pens. LMCAS was tabling at the event and promoting their upcoming convention. Student Life was running the game table and the League of Women’s voters was showing students how to register to vote and educating them on Prop 50.
One of the event’s most important features is the opportunity to register to vote. Students could register to vote online via QR code or manually fill out the form and hand it to the League of Women Voters’ representatives to bring to the voter registration office. The last day to register to vote in the special election is Oct. 20. The actual vote will take place on Nov. 4.
Shawn Gilbert, co-chair for voter services and community conversations, represented the League of Women Voters at the event. She informed people about how to register to vote, what Prop 50 is and why it’s important to vote on.
“It is a responsibility of all of us to celebrate our constitution, celebrate our rights, and celebrate that right of expressing our voice through voting,” said Gilbert, “When we vote, we are exercising our voice, our right to say whether we agree or disagree on things.”
Many visited the Constitution Day table as they learned more about the Constitution and the importance of exercising their right to vote.
