Universal Pictures “A Minecraft Movie” hit theaters around the world over the weekend and after a predicted failure from the internet, it turned out to be a surprise hit at the box office.
I went into the theater with low expectations but ended up having a really fun and enjoyable time overall. When you think about live-action in today’s film industry, many have been disappointing and underwhelming so I was pleased to have enjoyed this movie in particular.
The film starred well-known actors like Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, and Danielle Brooks. With the movie being labeled an adventure comedy it lived up to the standard.
It started off with the loading screen of the actual Minecraft game and narration from the star of the film Jack Black as the character Steve from the video game. His character gave a rundown of his life and how he always “yearned for the mines,” that yearning led him to discover an artifact that transported him to another world, which was the world of Minecraft.
Cut to the present time and we are introduced to Emma Myers as Natalie and Sebastian Hansen as Henry who are moving to a small town after the passing of their mom.
The other two characters Garrett who is played by Jason Momoa and Dawn who is played by Danielle Brooks are introduced to us during the film Garrett is an older previously famous video game champion and Dawn who is a real-estate worker.
After a series of events, all of the characters eventually end up in the Minecraft universe, which leads them to being introduced to Steve as they try to escape the newfound world.
The rest of the film is essentially their adventure through the world while trying to make it back home to their world.
Overall, Jack Black and Jason Momoa carried the film, their chemistry was seen throughout the movie, and every cheesy joke always hit.
As for the other three characters played by Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen, they did not have much depth in their personalities, all of them were given simple one-liners to egg on jokes and they honestly felt like filler characters just so Jason Momoa wasn’t solo throughout the film.
However, the best part of the movie was the Minecraft YouTuber cameos, LDShadowLady, DanTDM, and Aphmau had a small segment which was great for people like me who grew up watching them, the film also included Technoblade who was a very popular Minecraft YouTuber before he sadly passed away due to a battle with cancer back in 2022.
You can tell that the directors just wanted to have fun with this film, it was not a serious movie, just something an audience can watch, laugh, and enjoy.
It was heavily memed online before its release date which built up the hype that caused it to have over $301 million dollars globally on its opening weekend, this film is a perfect example that studios don’t need to take such serious approaches when making movies enjoyable or accurate, they just need to deliver a good time to the audience.
If you want to have a fun time without wanting to watch a serious film or if you want that nostalgia fix, I’d recommend taking a stop at the theater to watch ‘A Minecraft Movie.’
