New movie Heretic opened last Friday, Nov. 8, 2024. Heretic approaches religious commentary in a new light, slightly criticizing aspects of Mormonism and other religions, synthesizing that with dark, thrilling themes.
Two missionaries, Sister Barnes, played by Sophie Thatcher and Sister Paxton, played by Chloe East, find themselves at an older man’s fantastical house. Mr. Reed, played by Hugh Grant, invites the young ladies in to talk about the mission and values of Mormonism, shielding them from the harsh rain. This is when chaos ensues.
The cinematography and sounds paired perfectly to horrify the viewer, using artistically angled shots and many cuts to display the anxiety the two missionaries felt when placed into that situation. It progressively gets less predictable, and the anxiety ramps up with each new addition to the story.
The movie uses heavy visual effects to draw the viewer in and illustrate the story more-so than just by telling the viewer how to feel. This adds to the horror aspect, giving the viewer power over their own interpretations of the story.
The visuals are dark and gloomy, utilizing lighting effects with subtle sounds and capturing the melancholy and fear of being placed into such a bizarre yet horrifying situation. The references to religion, while more specific to Mormonism, touch on religious trauma and the heavy aspects of religion that are relevant to those with personal experience. It also touches on the lack of belief and cynicism some have regarding religion.
This movie hits all the markers when it comes to a classically beautiful thriller. Horror fans who appreciate disturbing, artful imagery will enjoy this film, as it doesn’t utilize excessive gore like some other current horror films.
