“Little Nightmares III” is the third installment in video game franchise Little
Nightmares by Super Massive Games and includes special features that allow for the game to be played in co-op. While the game’s industry rating is said to be mixed-to-average, it is metaphorical and brings light to some fairly sensitive issues.
For example, the game’s name itself has to do with the fact that player characters are small and come across as beings that look monstrous and are much bigger. The size difference establishes a sense of vulnerability, making players more aware of the game’s intentions in or: highlighting perils some children may face such as exploitation.
The game, which takes about seven to eight hours for a normal playthrough, features two new characters, Low and Alone. When playing solo you can play as either Low or Alone, but unlike prior games in the franchise, character Six does not physically appear.
The opening of “Little Nightmares III” is similar to the first two in the sense that the characters you play wake up in a dim, dirty room, and as you proceed through the game there is much to uncover and explore. Something common to each section you enter is that everything looks withered, and as you continue to encounter more monsters, the world around you starts to change.
The first monster you face is what is presumed to be a woman with six arms and a mechanical lower half she can detach from. When encountering her, you’re in the first stage of the game which primarily displays factories, with candy piled inside and outside.
Candy is used as a great example of what the game is trying to accomplish — bringing awareness of childhood danger — as it symbolizes luring children into risky situations.
Like its predecessors, the game’s mood is sad or hopeless and designed to give players a child’s perspective about how the world can contribute to endangering them. Players in “Little Nightmares III,” are meant to feel the fear, loss and frustration that comes with being a child, alongside your friend, trying to survive that type of dangerous atmosphere together.
If this sounds like something you would enjoy, the game costs $39.99 for the standard version, while the deluxe is $59.99 and is available on major platforms like Playstation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PC.
