I would like to express some concern over safety on campus. It seems that colleges are frequently in the news for violent crimes with stabbings, shootings and assaults happening multiple times a year on a college campus or involving college students.
I have been hearing stories from friends at UCs and CSUs that make them fear for their safety, yet it doesn’t seem like anyone is doing anything to make them feel more secure. While having police on campus is beneficial, there isn’t much else being told to us as students that would help keep us even a little bit safer.
LMC is notorious among students for its lack of communication — many of us don’t know about events or opportunities until they’ve already passed. While this can be annoying, student safety is incredibly important and the line of communication regarding it should be much more open than it is. I would be grateful if I could at least receive an email about what I should do if I feel unsafe.
While I understand that there is information available on the LMC website, being told only how to avoid getting sick under the “Safety Committee Safety Tips” section isn’t what I would call helpful. I, like many other students, would like and benefit from more open communication with the LMC staff.
