The DEIB mixer was held in the Student Union Feb. 5 from noon to 3:30 p.m. Student ambassadors hosted the event and encouraged all students to join ahead of Club Rush. The mixer was held so that LMC students know that Student Union has multiple clubs for all students to enjoy.
Heidri Nanon, a Los Medanos College student ambassador, served as one of the event hosts. “This mixer’s to help students know that they are accepted and welcomed for who they are, and to inform them that there are clubs on campus for them,” Nanon said.
Food provided at the event included food purchased from Wingstop, ranging from mild to hot wings, Cajun corn and fries. Caesar salad from Costco was also available. Students Naima Tillery and Aaron Clark were among some of the LMC students who were excited for the food and event. “I’m excited for the WingStop and to know more about clubs on campus,” Tillery said.
The newest learning community recognized was APIDA, which stands for Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi American. The APIDA learning community is designed to empower and support Asian Americans but is open to all.
Immigration services were also available. Khatryna Cavero set up a table to assist students who are immigrant students and need to know their rights during this dangerous time. The Dreamers also participated in the event. Hector Ramos, an LMC ambassador of The Dreamers, spoke with students about the benefits of the Dream Act and scholarships available to Latino and Latinx students.
APIDA has several upcoming events, including Lunar New Year and the Multicultural Festival. Event dates and times can be found on the LMC website under the calendar of events.
