The Umoja Scholars Program and Black Student Union hosted a bake sale on Dec. 2 from 11 am to 1 pm on the first floor of the Student Union. The items sold were hot chocolate, cookies, Christmas candy and Oreo cheesecake, with the top seller being Biscoff cheesecake.
“I made it with love,” said Jalyssa Batieste, the event coordinator of the bake sale, “I enjoyed making it. And being able to see people enjoy it made me happier.” Both the Biscoff and Oreo cheesecakes were $3, while the candy, brownies and cookies were $1 each.
Many Los Medanos College students approached the table to see what was happening, catching up with some of the club students and encouraging them to try some hot cocoa. Shawn Bentley was among the students who purchased the $1 hot cocoa and said it was “Bomb!” With several other students expressing the same excitement. The hot cocoa was $4 and students had the opportunity to customize their drink, add whipped cream, sprinkles, a festive stir stick and a candy cane.
Mark Tusubira, the BSU president, expressed his gratitude for the bake sale. “It went pretty well,” he said. “I really enjoyed spending time with people.” Tusubira explained that this was the first time he decided to bake an item for the bake sale event. “My brownies came out pretty good for my first time baking,” Tusubira said, “People enjoyed them, and I enjoyed seeing students enjoy them.”
Every semester, Umoja and the Black Student Union partner together to hold a fundraiser, and proceeds from the fundraiser go to both the Umoja learning community and Black Student Union. Currently, no events are planned for the spring semester.
