Frosting flew and cocoa steamed at Los Medanos College’s Student Union Dec. 1 as students dropped in from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to turn plain sugar cookies into colorful art pieces.
Students who wanted to join in for free to decorate cookies and drink hot chocolate just needed to sign up at the Student Life desk and grab a cup for their cocoa. Plain cookies were available, and frosting and other decorating supplies were on tables.
Student Life planned a series of events through Wednesday to help students destress in a calming, stress-free environment as finals quickly approach.
“We wanted the students to feel they can have a safe place during this time, where it’s the height of being the most stressed,” said Cheyenne Phan, one of the event organizers.
While making their colorful creations, students gathered with friends and chatted about their upcoming week. Student Safait Badiru loved the comfort the event brought to her and the friends she had brought along.
“It’s relaxing because I just sit here and decorate. It doesn’t have to look perfect. I feel relaxed,” she said.
Student Shale Lukhan, who is studying nursing, took the opportunity to enjoy a stress-free environment.
“I like these events around this time, because people like me who are in science classes, I’m super stressed out, so this is truly fun,” she said, offering suggestions for future events.
“Gingerbread houses, that would be so fun for Christmas,” she said.
That enthusiasm shows how much events such as these can excite students and encourage them to destress and enjoy some sweet treats.
Student Amisutu Kamaru hopes Student Life continues with activities like these.
“It is really fun when we have these chill events, events where you can connect and destress at the same time,” she said.
As finals week approaches, such events like this allow students to slow down and savor moments of comfort.Additionally, the event encourages the Christmas spirit.
