A mural event was held by LMC’s MESA program in the MESA Center located in the science building March 17.
The event was open to any and every student on campus, and students were encouraged to add their own quotes, or drawings, that represented what MESA meant to them.
MESA Program Assistant Emilio Gómez is who came up with the mural idea, “the main purpose of this mural is to show the community we have here in MESA,” Gómez said. “Although we are a pretty well-known program, a lot of us don’t really know how interconnected we are as a community. We decided to do a huge, little collective mural.”
The mural was worked on from 2 to 4:30 p.m., with students coming in and out, each adding their own spin on what MESA meant to them.
“MESA has honestly been like a huge community I found like honestly kinda recently,” said Mick Dostalik, a STEM major who’s been in the program for two years. “I feel like I’ve found my people at MESA, I feel like I’ve gotten a lot closer with friends and faculty.”
Dostalik recently started a new job, tutoring students in the program.
“I feel like it really helped me find a community of people that are going through the same struggle of being a STEM major; we all uplift each other, and it just feels very safe,” Dostalik said.
Dolstalik added a cute doodle of what she described as a “science kitty cat” who was doing research, since research is what she wants to pursue as a career in the future.
“I do feel like the mural was a little silly, but I think that’s also part of what MESA is,” Dolstalik continued. “I feel like it embodies a side of MESA…I definitely think you’ll see like all of our personalities come through on the mural, we all have big personalities, we’re all silly, and I think that will shine through.”
The mural is set to be presented Friday, May 2, in the Student Union building from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. for the STEM Research Symposium. This is the time for LMC students to showcase the type of research they’ve conducted throughout their time on campus.
