Los Medanos College’s Student Life welcomes students into the new Fall Semester by offering a free movie screening of Inside Out 2 on the lawn by the Student Lounge. Approximately 100 students attended the event which took place August 29 and was from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
At the event, students were greeted with games, free popcorn with student ID, and cotton candy.
Student Jade Belle was excited about the event. “I’m excited for everyone to enjoy the movie as much as I did the first time I saw it,” Belle said, “It’s very mind-opening.”
Student Julio Fernandez was also enjoying the event saying “It’s a nice evening, it’s not too hot and everyone is hanging out.”
As the night continued, students had multiple food options, including shaved ice which was given out by KAPWA club members.
“I’ve never seen the movie before so I’m excited,” said KAPWA President Heidriani Nanon.
Co-President of Puente Club Alex Montavan, was selling drinks at the booth next door.
Montoalvan was very excited about the event, “I’m excited this is our first big event outside of hours” said Montavan, “This is a way to unite the student body and students and to let them be exposed to clubs and see clubs they possibly want to join.”
Montoalvan said all the proceeds from this event would go back to old and new members and towards a Dia De Muertos event.
Lindsay Litowitz, Student life advisor and coordinator of the event said the organization of the movie showing took over two months to coordinate.
“We reached multiple students during the interview and staff and wanted to figure out what we could do. Many had said before that they had wanted a movie out on the lawn and have it be open to the public so they could invite family and friends,” said Litowitz.
One of them was Carlos Vargas, a Student Life associate, although not working the event, he wanted to support his co-workers and was looking forward to the free food.
“As a student life associate, I love how the community came together for events we work hard to plan,” Vargas added.
Other Student Life employees like Pamela Pereira, served popcorn.
“My favorite part of this event is serving popcorn,” Pereira said, “It’s a really good idea. People can relax and share with friends and family and see that college isn’t just for studying.”
Leo Chavarria was also at the event running the Active Minds booth.
“I’m excited to watch people bond over a good movie,” said Chavarria.
Litowitz was glad that the movie was shown on campus because of its connection to mental health.
“The turnout is good overall but not amazing, but I’m happy,” said Litowitz. “It’s a good mental health theme as we have a mental health table, and that allows us to spread mental health resources.”
