The Art Guild of the Delta showcased various types of artwork to Los Medanos College at the “Delta Energy” gallery reception this past Tuesday, Nov. 7. Members of the public, students and faculty filled the room and wandered around in attendance, looking at each piece on the wall.
“I think it’s really beautiful,” described Sania Veal, adding how the art showcased “ideas of peace and fun.”
Tyler Tapia also enjoyed the show and mentioned how “[the artists] inspire me a lot.”
A variety of sculptures and paintings decorated the room. Joy spread across the faces of many featured artists as they shared their work and creation processes during a Q&A session hosted by Art Professor Lucy Snow.
Artist Kitty Carton had two glass mosaic pieces in the show and said she looked forward to questions from the audience on “how” each was made. She notes each took hours to create and “lots of patience.” Whether her designs came from a template or not, Carton’s process is shaped by how each piece of glass cuts and breaks, adding how her floral designs came from “crazy shapes.”
For artist Jayne Tucker, her dyed teabag on canvas designs were favorites from the show as her inspiration was to “challenge [herself] to create movement.” Tucker said her piece was a tribute to her years living by the beach in Ventura, and “with the ocean having movement, I thought it would be a cool replica.” After interacting with the audience, she hopes her piece captures “the emotion of the ocean and the beauty of sustainability.”
A collaborative effort by Gallery Director Carol Ladewig and Senior Lab Coordinator Cesar Reyes, preparations for the reception took over a month. Ladewig focused on gathering art submissions, choosing pieces and designing the layout, while Reyes helped with the technicalities of lighting and microphones.
Reyes knew they “wanted to have the Art Guild of the Delta come by,” to show campus support but also to acknowledge the program support for LMC students. Each year, The Delta helps provide scholarships at the student art shows held annually on campus.
Since late October, the art in the gallery has been on display and will be available for viewing until Dec. 8. It is located in the LMC Pittsburg Library open Monday through Thursday from 12 to 4 p.m., free to the public.
“Art is a lifelong endeavor,” said Reyes. “I think a lot of the people from the Art Guild of the Delta have had previous careers and they’ve found passion in art and art making.”
