Mochinut, Brentwood’s newest doughnut, boba, and hotdog place, officially opened at the Streets of Brentwood April 19, and drew in many customers.
I had the opportunity to attend the grand opening and review many of their fresh new menu items. The first thing I will say about Mochinut is that it is the type of place that I would go back to repeatedly. The employees were welcoming, the store was modern and clean, however, there was barely any sitting space.
There was also a huge rush every time I would come back. Over the past week, I have visited the doughnut place a total of six times since the opening, accumulating two types of doughnuts, three types of boba, and one hotdog, shared with friends, of course.
The shop started as a popular place in Japantown in San Francisco, however, that location only offered doughnuts.
At this location, the options are endless, with soft serve being the newest thing to be added to their menu. The doughnuts are around $3.99 each and $9.99 for three of them, which for a college student, can add up.
I had the fruity milk pebble doughnut, a Japantown staple, and the chocolate sprinkle doughnut.
The fruity milk pebble doughnut was very good, but when warm, the frosting would get everywhere. After it cooled, the taste was much better, similar to one i’ve tasted from Japantown. The frosting complemented the fruity pebble cereal on top.
Soft, chewy and a very unique texture without all the greasiness of a regular doughnut.
The chocolate sprinkle doughnut tasted like a regular doughnut with a super soft and chewy twist. It was very fun to look at, and I noticed a top seller. I also loved it due to the chocolate not being overly sweet and tasting more like dark chocolate.
I was most excited for the boba. Over the few times I visited, I tried the classic milk tea, matcha milk tea, and ube milk tea.
For starters, I always get the classic milk tea as a tester for all boba. The boba was slightly cold but still very chewy, and you could tell it was homemade. The oolong black tea base was very delicious as well, although very sweet.
I personally loved the matcha milk tea due to its lack of sweetness. It also had a good amount of matcha in it, but it wasn’t too overpowering. And again, the boba was cold but very chewy.
The ube milk tea, on the other hand, was very nasty and made my stomach hurt a bit. I really don’t like ube normally, so I’m not sure what I expected with it. All of the boba drinks are $5.99 each, which is cheaper than some places.
Lastly, the potato original dog was sweet and crunchy and tasted very good. The savory from the potato and the sweetness from the cinnamon sugar made it taste heavenly. I would definitely get it again. Although it’s $5.99 for one hotdog
Overall, I would recommend students to check this place out!
The variety they offer between their hotdogs, doughnuts and boba is impressive and appealing. Each of the doughnuts change each week so it is worth seeing what they have from their seven different flavors to choose from.
The store is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m at The Streets of Brentwood, 2455 Sand Creek Road, Suite 108, a few doors down from Subway.
