Before the end of fall semester, art students partnered with local artist Drew Valencia to create a mural highlighting Native American culture. The piece was scheduled to be installed at the start of this spring semester, unfortunately some obstacles have halted the process.
“We don’t have a definitive time period on when it will be installed, but we anticipate that it will be this semester,” said Eric Sanchez, the art instructor whose classes created the piece. Sanchez also said, “The art piece would need to be installed when there isn’t a lot of foot traffic because the area needs to be corded off.”
One obstacle that the council is facing is the earthquake study. For the art piece to be mounted, a structural engineer must be brought in to assess the structural integrity of the building. The cost of the study is to be discussed during the next business meeting.
“We have no current information on who is researching the earthquake study, but we’re hopeful that the obstacles we face will be rectified and the mural will be installed before the spring semester ends,” says Lindsay Litowitz, a Student Life coordinator.
The art piece is to be installed in the student union, right of the entrance. Each panel is 5 feet by 5 feet, weighing about 40 pounds each. When it is fully installed, the piece will be 5 feet by 20 feet.
When the business meeting is held, the LMC Experience will work on updating students on more information about the hanging of the mural.
