The Roll Call Faculty and Staff art exhibition reception was hosted in the Los Medanos art gallery Thursday, Sept. 12 from 4p.m. to 6p.m. Staff, students and members of the community were in attendance to see the work on display and speak with the artists.
Many art students were there to see their instructors’ work and had high regards for the art and their creative processes shared.
Art student Andrea Ortiz described the opening show as amazing.
“It was very interesting to see different processes of design and what tools they used [that] created their ideas for it,” Ortiz said.
Ekko Vansant spoke of how the event was inspiring for their own art work.
“It gives me inspiration of what I can do and some new techniques that I didn’t know before,” Vansant said.
Art gallery director Sarah Lee led the talkback section with each faculty and staff artist that was in attendance for the show following, giving the backstories of their pieces and how each one came to be.
Graphic Arts Instructor John Schall was amongst the faculty with art of his own on display. He spoke of how he enjoys seeing his colleagues’ talent.
“It gives me a better understanding of them and respect for what they do,” Schall said. “We all kind of surprised each other.”
Honors Director Jen Saito said she always loves the faculty and staff show. She remarked how galleries like this one showed students what is the next step for them in their artistic pursuits.
“We have such talented people on campus,” Saito said. “It‘s interesting for them to meet artists with a lot of different visions and hear about that to push them out of their own creativity.”
Lee was pleased with how the event turned out, crediting the art department and gallery staff in helping to make the show possible.
“Everyone was so helpful, the staff all came together,” Lee said.
She deemed the show a success with both the turn out and the quality of work that was on display.
“I was impressed with the talent the staff had, I was blown away actually,” Lee said. “The submissions were super powerful so that gave me a powerful impression of the show.”
The faculty and staff’s art will be on display until Oct. 17 in the art gallery located in the LMC library. With free admission, the gallery is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 12-4 p.m.
