Thom Yorke, best known as the lead singer of Radiohead, releases his new studio album May 9, titled ‘Tall Tales.’
Three songs, along with three music video visuals, from the upcoming album have been pre-released to prepare fans for what is to come.
Yorke has dropped a few albums over the years since his first in 2006, but ‘Tall Tales’ will be his first non-movie soundtrack-related album since his 2014 album ‘Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes,’ making it a well-anticipated drop for fans.
The signature sound of Yorke is well showcased in the three pre-released songs of ‘Tall Tales,’ including his usual ambient, electronic, dream-like musical traits.
From the pre-releases, Yorke seems to experiment with more eerie and electronic sounds, keeping to his usual style while bringing something new to the table.
‘Back in the Game’ is the first pre-released track of ‘Tall Tales’ and the fourth song on the album. The song and its very fitting title are a great beginning to fans’ introductions to the album. The ambient, eerie, electronic atmosphere paints the picture of the upcoming listening experience.
‘Gangsters’ is the second pre-released song and is the seventh on the album. Continuing the eerie, dream-like atmospheric experience, this song carries those same electronic and melodic qualities as ‘Back in the Game’ while showcasing more of Yorke’s talent.
At the end of ‘Gangsters’, the music falls out in a way that seems as if the machinery that created the song broke down, which added more to the listening experience.
The last pre-released song on the album, leaving listeners to wonder about the remaining nine songs, is ‘This Conversation is Missing Your Voice.’ This song has a slightly more dream pop sound to it with its more upbeat drum machine loop and less dark-sounding sounds than the previous two songs.
The visuals that were released for each individual song have different concepts, but the same animation style. Yorke’s talent is creating experiences with his music. He doesn’t just make songs but creates a world to pull listeners into. The visuals include nightmarish animations with odd-looking monsters.
The visuals for ‘Back in the Game’ and ‘Gangsters’ feature otherworldly animated creatures and a creepy fantasy world. The videos are simple but pull you into this world that Yorke has created.
For ‘This Conversation is Missing Your Voice’ the visual is simply from the perspective of being on a conveyor belt in a shipping warehouse and ending up in a bright heaven like place on the belt by the end of the song and although simple, it continues to pull you out of reality when paired with the song.
While fans wait for the full album to be released, they can imagine what’s to come with ‘Back in the Game’, ‘Gangsters’, and ‘This Conversation is Missing Your Voice.’ Until May 9, ‘Tall Tales’ is eagerly awaited by fans, but until then, the already highly rated three pre-releases will have to ease the anticipation.
