A new absurdist comedy will premiere on stage as the Los Medanos College Drama Department puts on ‘Picasso at the Lapin Agile,’ written by Steve Martin and directed by Greg Brown. This comedy opens Oct. 17 in the Little Theater on the Pittsburg campus, and will run for just over a week.
The historical fiction comedy follows Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso, who meet in a bar in 1904 before Picasso’s transition into cubism and Einstein’s theory of relativity.
The play is packed with funny moments. Actor Jayden Hawkins said she is looking forward to the audience’s perceptions of the characters and the delivery of lines the most.
“For some of the jokes I like, I am excited to hear their reactions,” said Hawkins. “I love when the audience takes a different perspective.”
Actor Isaiah Fuentes is eager for people to see the outlandish production.
“When [they] come to the show, they are going to see something different,” said Fuentes.
Actor Christian Thomasson’s favorite moments in preparation for opening night have been learning from his fellow actors and the experienced crew working on the production.
“I was just so happy to be a part of this crew and to learn so many things,” said Thomasson.
The cast and crew have been busy learning lines, designing costumes, creating the set, and everything in between.
Director Greg Brown explained how truly laborious a task and rollercoaster of emotions putting together a production is.
“Putting on a show is probably the most complicated and emotional thing I can think of,” said Brown. “For me as a director, watching it all come together is very gratifying.”
The opening night of the show is Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater on campus. Tickets can be purchased online under the “Now Playing” tab on the Dramatic Arts page. Prices vary with general admission at $15, with proof of student status or service ID at $12, and students with high school or middle school IDs at $10.
