DEAR EDITOR:
Food waste is an escalating issue on college campuses, and Los Medanos College is no exception.
Each day, significant amounts of leftover food from cafeterias, vending machines, and student functions are thrown away while many students contend with food insecurity.
Addressing this issue is both an environmental responsibility and a social duty that LMC needs to acknowledge seriously.
A practical solution would be to create a food recovery program where surplus food from on-campus dining facilities is given to local shelters or a student food pantry. Many colleges have already adopted similar programs, significantly reducing food waste while aiding those in need.
Additionally, increasing awareness through student-led initiatives and educational campaigns can motivate responsible consumption and waste reduction.
LMC has the opportunity to lead in sustainability by supporting food recovery programs. With collaborative efforts from students, faculty, and administration, we can make a substantial impact.
Reducing food waste is not just about saving food; it’s about fostering a culture of responsibility and compassion on our campus.
