There are talks of disbanding the U.S Department of Education when the Trump Administration took hold in office.
As a collective, we support the U.S Department of Education and stress the importance of maintaining and keeping it in the government. The U.S Department of Education is responsible for many aspects that will be severely impacted if it closes down. They manage college finances and student loans. They make sure the funds are distributed fairly. They’re the ones that fund FAFSA and student programs like Disability services.
Getting rid of the department will make it harder to afford college because most of us rely on FAFSA and student loans to pay off the tuition. They also conduct studies throughout the public education systems and use that data to give policy makers and teachers a way to figure out how to improve our society’s education. They prevent discrimination by investigating schools that would participate in discrimination. They also ensure that students with disabilities receive their accommodations by funding the DSPS program.
If the Department of Education is abolished, Public Schools will not receive the funding to educate their students. The right to a free education may suffer without a Department to investigate discrimination claims.
Also, Disabled students won’t receive accommodations if their funding is cut. Most of all, our FAFSA and student loan benefits will disappear, which can affect students coming from financially vulnerable backgrounds. People fear that education in America will be less accessible for middle and lower-income families. Private schools are unaffected because they get most of their income from outside sources, not the Government.
The Department of Education makes it easier to access quality education; eliminating it would threaten the right to education.
