Los Medanos College held a celebration in the Pittsburg campus outdoor quad on August 29 to mark the college turning 50 years old. The event lasted from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and welcomed everyone back to campus after the summer break.
There was pizza, cotton candy, a photo booth, and an array of games set up where students could win small prizes and race against each other in Go-Karts. Spirits were high and the music was up while students and staff roamed around the event.
Member of The Contra Costa Community College District sustainability team, Katherine Chen expressed the joy of the day’s event.
“It feels like a festival, it’s very lively and a fun way to come back,” Chen said.
KAPWA president, Heidriani Nanon, also felt the day was like a party with everyone gathered.
“There’s a lot of foot traffic, I like the festival vibe we’re getting,” Nanon said.
Booths lined the quad where students could get more information on resources available on campus or explore some of the clubs open for students to join.
Student Areanna Guzman who was representing the S.T.R.E.A.M. club and Recording Arts program, spoke of the importance of having an event like this for the campus community.
“An event like this is really crucial because there’s so many people who don’t know where the music building [is] and other clubs,” Guzman said. “This main quad everyone walks around it so if we’re putting out tables and informing them people will actually see it.”
Student Joshua Borja commented how the day promoted unity and helped incoming students learn about programs they didn’t know existed.
Student Edgar Sanchez who volunteers with the Basic Needs Department promoted the Marketplace on campus that is free and available to both students and staff to get groceries.
“Our goal is to just help as many students and staff who need it,” Sanchez said.
The event was full of life from beginning to end with many students ready to take on the new semester of classes.
