The Los Medanos baseball team delivered an impressive home victory against the visiting Laney College Eagles last Thursday.
The Mustangs controlled the game, securing a dominant 5-0 win, despite Laney being the No. 1 team in the Bay Valley Conference.
The Mustangs started strong, with their first pitcher, D1 prospect Shawn McBroom, taking the mound. McBroom wasted no time, quickly securing two outs within his first two pitches.
The first inning remained quiet, but the Mustangs gained momentum in the second. After back-to-back ground-outs, left fielder Kai Smith crushed a home run, putting LMC ahead 1-0.
As the game progressed, both teams fought hard, with several back-and-forth moments, including failed steal attempts and crucial strikeouts.
However, the Mustangs maintained their composure and control. By the end of the third inning, the score remained 1-0 in favor of Los Medanos.
In the fourth inning, the Laney College Eagles struggled to gain any momentum as the Mustangs executed back-to-back ground-outs to second base and a ground-out to shortstop.
Los Medanos kept the pressure on with consecutive successful steal attempts by first and third baseman, #6 Nathan Leffel.
Despite their aggressive play, the Mustangs were unable to extend their lead, as Laney tightened its defense and prevented another run. Moving into the fifth inning, Laney College saw a golden opportunity to shift the game’s momentum by loading the bases, forcing Los Medanos to take their first timeout.
However, the Eagles failed to capitalize on the situation. Mustangs pitcher Shawn McBroom clutched the inning, striking out the final batter and ending Laney’s scoring attempt.
By the close of the inning, the Mustangs still held their narrow 1-0 lead, maintaining control of the game and denying Laney any chance to turn the tide.
As the sixth inning began, Laney College made a strategic pitching change, hoping to turn the tide in their favor.
However, the switch did little to slow down the Mustangs, who remained focused on offense. #18 Trent Keys came through with a crucial hit, bringing Leffel home for the team’s second run of the game.
Laney’s defensive struggles persisted, as a miscommunication between fielders led to a costly dropped catch. The Mustangs took full advantage of these mistakes, maintaining their momentum heading into the seventh inning.
LMC continued their dominance by scoring two more runs and sealing the top of the inning with a well-executed double, pushing the score to 4-0.
Recognizing the need for fresh energy on the mound, Los Medanos replaced pitcher Shawn McBroom with shortstop and pitcher Heeryun Han. Laney also made a pitching swap, but it failed to slow down LMC’s offense.
By the eighth inning, right fielder Daniel Polasek delivered another key play, bringing in a run to extend the lead to 5-0. After nine innings of strong performances on both offense and defense, the Mustangs secured a decisive 5-0 victory over Laney College.
Now, Los Medanos looks to carry their home-winning streak forward as they prepare to host Solano Community College on March 12.
