The LMC Mustangs pulled out an 8-7 win in their matchup Wednesday against the Sierra College Wolverines. Shawn McBroom, above, winds up for the pitch that ends the eighth inning. “It was a close game, our first of the season,” said Shaun Mante, another LMC pitcher who did not play in the Feb. 26 contest. “We needed this win. It’s been we lose by a lot or win by a lot, never this close.” The game was back and forth, with LMC securing their lead in the fourth at 5-4. The last two innings were tense, going into the eighth inning with LMC leading 8-5 and Sierra picking up two runs to close the gap. LMC brought in No. 6 Nate Leffel to close out the game. Leffel had a near perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts and a groundout to third base. Overall, the Mustangs showed competence as a Top 3 team, with an effective defense and skilled pitchers. The team has had a rough go of it, with a 5-9 record on the road. The next game against Sierra will start at home, Feb. 28 at noon.
