The Los Medanos College Women’s soccer team has been running a grueling gauntlet against some of the best junior college teams in Northern California. Tuesday night their situation did not get any easier.

LMC took on Las Positas College, who had one of its best seasons in school history last year by winning its first Coast-North Conference title before losing to San Joaquin Delta College in the first round of the playoffs in an upset fashion.

The result of this game though was no upset, just pure dominance. Las Positas defeated LMC 4-0.

It all started early in the first half, where what should have been a routine save by Mustangs goalkeeper Rylie Pearson ended up being a goal scored by Las Positas’ Gabriella Polizzi to edge the Hawks 1-0.

Pearson did find her groove later in the game by recording a pair of diving saves during a series of attacks. She finished the night with a season high of 13 saves.

“That’s just something uncommon of her,” LMC head coach Zach Sullivan said about her failed save early in the game.

Right before the half ended LMC committed a handball in the box, resulting in a penalty. Meghan Giamona buried the ball to edge Las Positas to a 2-0 lead heading into halftime, though that was not the last time Giamona would dominate the court.

Giamona completed a hattrick in the second half, as in the 60th minute she hit a ball from outside the box that banged off the post and into the back of the net, while her third goal was a beauty from 30 yards out was placed elegantly and just like her second goal, bounced off the iron before hitting the net.

For LMC it was a rough day offensively, with no shots on goal the entire game. Yet, Las Positas’ head coach Paul Sapsford credited them.

“We played much better in the second half. We passed it well and combined better,” Sapsford said. “They’re a good team, Zach’s doing a great job, and they [LMC] should make him full time.”

The Mustangs have been in a slump, with its 4-0 loss against Las Positas LMC riding on a four game winless streak, and being outscored 12-2 during that span. This margin may reflect a struggle, but it really shows this program isn’t afraid to play anyone, like Delta College who had a deep run in last year’s playoffs and West Valley College, a team that returned seven All-Coast selection players.

It’ll only battle test them for what is ahead as conference play kicks-off this Friday Sept. 21 when they host Mendocino College at 2 p.m.

“All those schools are double and triple the size of our school,” Sullivan said. “It helps us to prepare just so the speed of the game is faster. They’re more athletic. They’re a lot deeper. So when we play teams that are closer to our size, it just gets us ready to play quicker.”
