Los Medanos women’s volleyball team started off yet another strong year of conference play as they pull off a dominant win against Solanoon their home turf for an impressive conference win. While their overall record of 6-9 could use improvement, they stand atop the Bay Valley conference in first place.
The Mustangs would host at home against Mendocino on Set. 21 at Pittsburg at 6 pm and pulled out another victory for the home crowd.
The ladies gave up the first set to Mendocino as their defense held up a number of blocks and saves against the Mustangs offensive shots.
The first set came to a close with the score 25-20 giving Mendocino the first set and an early lead with 14 kills for Los Medanos.
The second set certainly belonged to the Mustangs, as they received assists from sophomore Caitlin Sadler and freshman Erica Wilder to bring in easy points with kills from Sam Rhodes and Meagan Egoy.
The ladies came out looking like a different team as the Mustang defense showed out and kept the offensive pace forward and succeeding in getting in the points on the board for the Mustangs.
Calissa Leming and Jordynn Castleberry emerged as defensive stalwart for the Mustangs in the second set.
Mendocino executed their offense and took advantages of Los Medanos.
However, the Mustangs would wrap up the second set with a 17-25 win, advancing to the third set with a identical score of 17-25 win.
The Mustangs would win the game 3-1 giving Los Medanos a true first place glory to them.
Stat leaders for Los Medanos included setter Erica Wilder who had 28 assists, leading the team, and offensive hitter Sam Rhodes, who had 19 kills during a single game against Mendocino.
“I thought we competed well, although we have some players with injuries and all the girls stepped up.” Said Head Coach Lou Panzella.
The Mustangs then played Laney on the road and won that game by the score 3-0 to maintain and extend their winning streak and keeping the 1st place lead with a 3-0 overall in the Bay Valley conference.
Los Medanos next home game will face against Contra Costa on Oct.5th.
