Los Medanos College held an event in celebration of Holi near the Student Union with organization by Student Life and its Program Coordinator Lindsay Litowitz, Thursday April 24.
The event was initially slated for March 4, however was initially canceled twice due to poor weather conditions and inability to get resources in time.
Students enjoyed the windy day by flying colorful kites and throwing gulal — colorful powders that stem from a deep-rooted tradition during Holi. Students were given the option to wear hair nets and glasses, and t-shirts that said “Happy Holi” were passed out to attendees.
The event also had a few tents set up, with one handing out gulal and another providing donuts and lemonade. Students had lots of fun, throwing gulal on each other, dancing and cheering.
During organization by Student Life Ambassadors, there were many hindrances to the success of the event, but it turned out to be a beautiful celebration in the end. Student Life Ambassadors Tenisha Manohoran and Mali Wyatt worked with Litowitz to bring the Holi celebration to life.
“The first two times that we ordered [the caterers] delivered, [but] it got canceled. The third time they were not responding to calls, so we couldn’t get the food and had to do donuts,” Wyatt shared of the struggle to get the food in time for the event.
“I think also the biggest process was setting up the actual event once we were there,” Wyatt continued, “I don’t think there was enough time allocated. Even if there wasn’t enough time, it did make it.”
Wyatt added that next time she would like to hold it on a less windy day on a different part of campus.
“It was probably the funnest thing I’ve done on campus,” Wyatt shared. “It’s nice that people participated without getting too worried about getting the colors on themselves.”
Students who attended enjoyed many aspects of the Holi celebration.
“My friends and I had a lot of fun at the Holi event. My favorite part was getting to throw the [gulal] in the air and then throwing the rest at [other attendees],” said student David Duldulao.
Another student, Rion Fernandez appreciated the many thoughtful aspects of the event.
“It was very active and there was good music,” Fernandez said, adding that he appreciated the themed t-shirts. Fernandez and Duldulao dressed up as Bugs Bunny and the Grinch to celebrate the event.
Fernandez shared that LMC President Pamela Ralston also joined in on the fun, encouraging students to continue to throw the gulal.
