Los Medanos College hosted its second Blood Drive featuring students from the Healthcare Excellence and Leadership club on campus. The Blood Drive which was hosted by H.E.A.L was on March 12th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., which motivated students to learn more about their blood type and more about how to help others in the community.
Members from the American Red Cross visited LMC to draw blood from both students and faculty and offered snacks to donors who needed them.
Shwe Yee (Abigail) Thinn, H.E.A.L club’s vice president, said that 28 donors had registered to donate and they welcomed walk-ins as well.
“I believe students and faculties should join blood drives for donation as an act of kindness and generosity. I believe whether it’s a big or small act of kindness, it always brightens the community, and this is how we spread love and care. Blood donation centers or charity centers often provide donor incentives items or occasionally provide small gift cards for appreciation which can be kept as a memory,” said Thinn.
Hillary Alvarez, one of the volunteers for the Blood Drive said how it’s important to donate blood. “There are a lot of people who are having surgery who need the blood, especially for those who are type O,” said Alvarez.
Brianna Reyes, another volunteer, had said that “your blood can make a difference and it can be the life and death of someone. If I had a family member who needed it then I would want someone to take time out of their day to do so,” said Reyes.
Ana Garcia, a student who donated blood, said the overall process was fine. “I’m just happy I can donate and help someone. The process was quick and easy and I hope to make a difference.” said Garcia, adding, “I shared a photo of me being here and hope others do the same.”
