The students walked down a red carpet and pink streamers as they entered the brightly decorated second-floor Student Union room to celebrate Galentine’s Day. The room was decorated with shiny pink and gold heart balloons in a heart-shaped arch and pink and red tablecloths. The Galentine’s Day event occurred on February 13, from six p.m. to nine p.m. Many student organizations collaborated to make the event possible. Student Life provided the venue, and two workers, Sarah Capperald and Carlos Galvez Vargas, planned the event. The Marketplace set up the arts and crafts station, with provided beads and string to make friendship bracelets. The Honors Club hosted cookie decoration. In the Puente room, the Writers Guild hosted an event entitled ‘a blind date with books’, where they raised funds for their club by wrapping and selling donated books. The cover and title are hidden from the reader. They also hosted karaoke and set up a tarot reading room. The event provided cotton candy, pizza, and soda. Many people enjoyed the activities provided at the party. One of them gravitated towards the arts and crafts table.
“I love making bracelets and necklaces that I can wear all the time. I’m making it for myself because self-love is the best,” said theater major Amanda Turner. The arts and crafts table was set up in the Honors Club room.
Students could choose between making friendship bracelets or folding origami hearts. The tarot card reading room returned after popularity at last semester’s Halloween party. Turner, a full-time college student with five years of tarot experience, reads the cards. She volunteered to do so because she is friends with Capperauld.
“I could do anything from the Celtic Cross, Three Spread, Wheel of Fortune,” Turner said.
Karaoke was a popular activity. Around 7 p.m., people signed up for the event hosted by Hedriani Nanon, the Kapwa Club’s Co-President. The songs ranged from pop to ballads, heartbreak, and Lovestruck. Two of the singers were Jordan Ramey and Honeymeil Monticello. They sang “Love Shack” by the B-52s.
“Karaoke is one of my favorite parts of partying. It’s something that people can come together to have fun with,” said Ramey
Students decorated blank heart-shaped sugar cookies on a large table with pale pink, red, and white frostings. They piped intricate designs and topped them off with sprinkles. After seeing an Instagram post about it, Honors student Yelena Rasco attended the event.
“I wanted to decorate a cookie. I’m not gonna lie; that was the only reason I’m here.”
After returning from Winter break, Capperauld and Vargas started planning this event a month and a half ago. It was a collaborative effort between the two of them. Vargas focused on the overall aesthetic of the room. He was behind the heart-shaped balloons and red streamers. Both students wanted to add more activities compared to the last Galentine’s event.
“We took inspiration from our last Galentine’s that we had, which was the first one here on campus, and we basically added a few other things like crafts and tarot card reading,” Capperauld said.
