In true fall spirit, LMC’s Women in STEM Program hosted a fundraiser event Oct. 23, selling lattes and pumpkins in the Student Union. The event was not only for a good cause — highlighting the need to increase women in science, technology, engineering and math careers — but it also made for a great treat and fun time for students.
“[It was] literally a fun-raiser,” said student Lucy Servantes, who attended the event. “I think it’s important not only for the women in STEM, but to get the word out to women thinking about wanting to go into STEM.”
Student Brenda Maya, the organizer of the fundraiser, explained it is important women know that there are different directions they can take after high school. STEM majors and workers represent the backbone of the country, creating technological advancements, improving healthcare, and finding solutions.
“It also helps bring awareness to the STEM program and hopefully shows people, and women specifically, that there are many routes you can take for your future, and encourages them to be what they want to be,” Maya said.
The fundraiser helped to raise money to support Women in STEM to be able to go on trips, have more opportunities, and “hopefully the funds will go towards something bigger in the future,” she added.
The event, which was held from 3 to 5 p.m., was a hit as students filled the hallway waiting to buy lattes and take turns decorating pumpkins at the painting table.
“Not only is it helping support women in STEM but it is also a great way to destress and hang out with friends,” said student Patience Isch.
Student Khloe Josephsen, who painted pumpkins with her friends, enjoyed the event saying, “I didn’t even know it was a fundraiser, but I’m glad I came.”
Maya said the STEM program hadn’t had a fundraiser in a long time, but hopes to be able to host yearly events after the success of this one.
“We chose to sell lattes and paint pumpkins for the fundraiser because it fits the fall vibe and we wanted it to be fun for students,” Maya said.
The STEM program hopes to be able to host yearly fundraiser events after the success of this one.
“I hope this event will help women already in STEM, and encourage more to join soon,” Maya said.
