The booming sound of rhythmic drums welcomed Danza Azteca Coatlaxopeuh, a traditional Aztec Dancer group that highlighted Los Medanos College’s celebration of Dia De Los Muertos Oct. 29 in the Student Union Conference Center.
The holiday, celebrated by many Hispanic/Latinx cultures, inspired seven Los Medanos College clubs and organizations to host a cultural event that drew more than 150 participants for an evening of entertainment and activities.
The event was held the day before Dia De Los Muertos, which is traditionally celebrated Nov. 1 and 2 to honor those who have passed. The event included colorful traditional altars containing images and mementos in remembrance of joyous moments with loved ones.
The Aztec dance group, which included LMC student Stephanie Cuevas, a mariachi band, and a cultural identity parade served as the night’s entertainment, and attendees also got to participate in activities such as sugar skull painting, face painting and cookie decorating. The event was such a hit that there was an hour-long wait for tacos and Mexican beverages.
Throughout the night many people commented on never before seeing a culturally significant local event this grand.
“Within our district, no one else is doing this,” said LMC counselor Dionicio Garcia.
The Día de Los Muertos event was hosted by the Puente club with the help of Firme club, LatAm club, the Equity and Inclusion department, LMC Student life and the Counseling Department.
“We tried to include as many people as possible, especially after Covid,” said Puente club president Guadalupe Gama, adding that the event took months of planning and fundraising to pull off.
