The Honors Club hosted a welcome party at LMC on October 9. It took place in the evening at the Student Union Patio, and extended indoors to the Student Lounge for karaoke and games.
“This event is part of Honors Club, which is the extra curricular part of what we do, and it’s basically just for people to have fun,” said Jennifer Saito, Honors director and club adviser.
Honors is one of five learning communities on campus, featuring a mixture of classes and services.
Saito shared that since the year just started, a welcome party was a good way to introduce new students to both the Honors Transfer Program and the club.
Around 15 officers contributed to planning, and this was the first ever event that they had organized.
The event consisted of an assortment of food, such as pizza — both vegan and non vegan options — and chips. Bottles of water and soda cans were also provided.
Students were the ones who came up with the ideas for what to serve.
“The most important decision is what the food is gonna be,” said Saito.
The event took advantage of its outdoor setting and provided attendees with a relaxed fall theme. Jenga pieces and a volleyball net had been set up, and bubbles were arranged on each of the tables.
These bubbles were not originally planned during the event; however, as decorations were being prepared, Saito found an entire box of bubbles and thought it would be a good idea to include them.
“It’s an amazing program and event,” said Richard Stanfield.
Stanfield used to be an officer for the Honors Program back in 2017 and now works for the college as a program assistant in Outreach.
“It’s very exciting meeting new students, going out and reaching out to students,” he said.
As the sun set, students congregated in the lounge for karaoke and a game of Mafia in one of the Student Union conference rooms. The room was packed and lively, with participants very involved and eager to play; everyone had been arranged in a circle, committed to their roles and the enjoyment of the game.
People who received invites could RSVP in advance via email. The party took place from 5 p.m. to around 7:30 p.m.
