LMC faculty held an In-Comm-Unity event in the LMC Pittsburg Unity Room Wednesday, Oct. 2 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event was held as part of the Active Minds club, to provoke a reflective discussion regarding intersectionality and to discuss mental health and well-being.
Nicole Westbrook, Student Retention counselor, and Adrianna Simone, Social Justice, and Ethnic Studies department chair, spoke alongside Megela Ohare, who organized this event.
“I feel like this is a good start for a bigger conversation we could be having about intersectionality and LGBTQ+ identities,” Jordan Ramey, Student Life ambassador and Pride Alliance Club Leader, shared of the discussion.
The conversation was in-depth and explored how people’s intersecting identities shape the unique experiences one can have, including experiences related to the college curriculum, and campus life.
“I thought the conversation was very engaging; and thought-provoking. Not just for the students, but also for the faculty, the professors, the counselors that came; we also got something out of it,” said Ohare, LMC’s Basic Needs Program Coordinator and Active Minds club leader. “Every time I attend these events, I learn something more about myself, and where I wanna be as a person, but also how I can help to develop the students.”
Simone, Ohare, and Westbrook created a space for students to share ideas, build off of each other, and learn more about intersectionality as a whole. Food and drinks were also provided.
“This is a reminder to everyone at the campus, especially to our scholars, that we have opportunities for them to enter classroom spaces where these topics will also be discussed,” Simone said.
Simone recommended taking Ethnic Studies classes, as well as LGBTQ+ studies classes, to any students who would like to facilitate discussions pertaining to the topics discussed at the In-Community-Event.
