The indoor quad was abuzz with activity as students made their way inside to attend LMC’s Club Carnival Sept. 24. The event featured tables and activities for students looking to join active clubs on campus.
The halls were packed with the chatter of excited students and music blasting with tables on all sides of the quad. Clubs were tasked with spreading the word about future activities to as many students as possible through conversation, flyers, displays and games.
Each table contained a sign-up sheet for students looking to join.
Among some of the participating clubs were Hyphae, Philosophy, Honors, Kapwa, S.T.R.E.A.M., Computer Science, and Rotaract.
The Game Club was accompanied by a TV and console for playing Street Fighter. Black Student Union was hosting a ring toss activity, where students could win a small prize and a complementary bracelet.
Puente club members handed out snacks and hot sauce to visitors. Nearby, Muslim Student Alliance offered interested students the opportunity to try on a hijab and Honors Club provided brochures and Otter Pops.
Club members remarked on the importance of participating in events like the Club Carnival, highlighting how successful they were in recruiting new members, and how excited they were to start off the fall semester.
Black Student Union President Mikayla Hubbard shared how their club was interested in volunteer work, having black students at LMC come together, and providing a space that’s open to all students.
“You get to be a part of people who you might not see often outside of the Black Student Union, you know,” she said. “As a minority student, you just want to build that community and have those connections, and make those friendships, because that’s really important in college.”
On the other side of the quad, the Philosophy Club’s table had an assortment of pastries such as cookies, cupcakes, and chocolate chip muffins on sale. The cookies were baked by the club’s advisor, Tiffany Morgan.
Philosophy Club Vice President Jace Wallace emphasized how time and location are some of the most crucial pieces of information he wanted to communicate to students interested in joining the club. He explained how the Club Carnival event was helpful in matters of fundraising and recruitment adding “The more new members, the better.”
Near the Music Department, S.T.R.E.A.M. Club’s table featured a collection of magazines and flyers relevant to music production, alongside a MIDI controller, a device that allows users to make music on a digital interface, modulating pitch and rhythm.
S.T.R.E.A.M. President Sergio Donis expressed his surprise at how well the turnout had been. The club is open to anyone who loves music, both artists and listeners, interested in learning more about the recording arts industry, regardless of experience.
“Honestly, it’s been really good. Way better than I expected,” said Donis. “I mean, our sign-up sheet is almost full at the moment.”
Students looking to join clubs are welcome to visit the upper floor of the Student Union or they may visit the LMC website’s Campus Clubs page for more information.
