To recognize students transferring, Los Medanos College held its annual Transfer Day celebration in the outdoor quad May 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
There were inflatable games, free popcorn, cotton candy, hot dogs, and lemonade for those in attendance. Along with food, games and music, there was an area for students to decorate their graduation caps before the ceremony.
The biggest hit of the event was the dunk tank, where faculty sat to test their fate getting dunked by fellow staff members and students.
College President Pamela Ralston was amongst the faculty members who took a turn atop the dunk tank, and was dunked a total of seven times. She noted it was more fun after the initial first plunge into the water.
“It’s a great experience, everyone has had so much fun,” Ralston said. “That’s really what today is all about, getting the chance to celebrate.”
Ralston spoke about the importance of celebrating graduating students and how LMC is a part of students’ origin stories.
“At a college like ours, there is nothing more spectacular than the last couple of weeks of the semester and getting ready to see everybody reach what they have been working for,” Ralston said.
Transfer and Career Services Student Ambassador Negin Khalafi commented that the event is beneficial for all students — even those not planning to transfer this coming fall.
“Even if [students] are not transferring this year, when they come up and ask what the event is about and have questions, we can get them connected to us when it comes to transferring,” Khalafi said.
Student Xochitl Mendoza enjoyed the event’s food and the lively music as she expressed her joy for an event like this.
“You see a bunch of people involved in the school and it’s a safe space to get together and have fun,” Mendoza said.
Transfer and Career Services Director Rachel Anicetti assisted students in decorating graduation caps, noting it was her favorite part of the day’s festivities.
“Many of us know how hard it is to get to that point of transfer. We want to celebrate and admire all the hard work folks put into being a scholar,” Anicetti said.
The event was put on by Transfer and Career Services and made possible with the help of Student Life, EOPS, CARE and CalWORKS.
